A SLOW-MOTION GENOCIDE: INDONESIAN RULE IN WEST PAPUA

A  SLOW-MOTION GENOCIDE:

INDONESIAN RULE IN WEST PAPUA

By Dr Jim Elmslie and Dr Camellia Webb-Gannon

This paper examines and extends the debate on genocide in West Papua. Referring to the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention, examples of genocidal acts are listed: killings, causing serious bodily and mental harm, the deliberate infliction of conditions of life calculated to cause the destruction of a group, and the forcible removal of children to another group. Whereas previous examinations of the issue have failed to prove intent on the part of the Indonesian Government – a necessary pre-requisite under the Convention – this article finds that such intent exists. The authors show that West Papua has suffered a military occupation since 1962-63 under which the West Papuan people have been treated as the enemy by the Indonesian armed forces. Explicit and implicit government policy has been consistently directed towards countering and eliminating Papuan attempts to create an independent state for their nation or enjoy political freedom on a par with other Indonesians. In this tightly controlled situation genocidal acts have been undertaken as government policy, effectively thwarting the Papuan nationalists in the era when information emerging from the province(s) could be tightly controlled. In this internet age, however, this is no longer possible, as evidence of both genocidal acts and government ‘intent’ is emerging. This augurs poorly for Indonesia and the region as the little known, but deeply entrenched, conflict in West Papua seeps into global consciousness as a ‘slow-motion’ Pacific genocide.

Access for International Journalists to West Papua Petition

To Sign: Click Here

Indonesia does not give international journalists access to West Papua to record the grave injustices done towards the West Papuans.

Up until now Australia has also actively ignored the West Papuan injustice. For decades it has unwittingly done deals with human right abusers and provided weapons that have killed West Papuans and sustained their torment. The West Papuan genocide is now at 500,000.

Recently the Honourable Julie Bishop was most outspoken against Russia on the 298 deaths from airplane crash MH17, a tragedy that happened some 12,000 km away from Australia. We encourage the Honourable Julie Bishop to do good again by unplugging the ears and opening the eyes of the Australian Government and stand up to Indonesia which is only 200 km away from Australia.

Please support this petition and the letter we’re sending:

Dear Ms Bishop,

West Papua was previously a Dutch colony but was handed over to Indonesia in the 1960s without the consultation of the indigenous people and entirely against their will. The West Papuan people were denied their fundamental rights to self-determination and independence ever since and are struggling for their rights to this day against an increasingly brutal Indonesian military who have killed an estimated 500,000 indigenous Papuans. In an attempt to cover up the human rights atrocities, genocide and occupation; the Indonesian government still bans foreign journalists from reporting in West Papua and with the threat of violence restricts even local journalists from documenting the independence struggle.

The people of West Papua desperately need international journalist access and media freedom in their country so that the outside world will be able to take notice of the human rights violations happening there. This will allow the international community to act to prevent such violence against the West Papuans in the future and allow them their human rights including their long overdue right to self-determination.

Thankfully, on 30th July 2014, the New Zealand Parliament passed an historic motion, moving that “the House call upon the new President of Indonesia to commit to genuine media freedom in West Papua including the right of local and international journalists to report on the political situation there without risk of imprisonment or harassment by the Indonesian state.” The motion was passed with no opposition and was a major landmark on the road to journalists’ access to West Papua.

Recently the Indonesian military began an operation in the Lanny Jaya region of West Papua in an attempt to exterminate pro-independence sentiment. Indonesian soldiers are currently burning villages, killing livestock and forcing thousands of villagers to flee into hiding in the jungle where they are suffering in poverty. On 6th August, two French journalists, Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat who had been trying to document this emergency situation for French/German TV Channel Arte, were arrested by the Indonesian police. They were being threatened with a 5 year jail sentence and a 40,000 US dollar fine simply because they were journalists operating in West Papua.

Petition:

As the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, I am calling on you to please urge the Australian government to join New Zealand by calling upon the Indonesian government to allow full international journalist access and media freedom in West Papua.

Please urge the government to pressure the state of Indonesia to allow genuine media freedom so that international journalists such as Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat and the West Papuan people may freely report on the real and pressing situation in West Papua.

It is my sincere hope that with the Australian government support, the Indonesian government will finally let the truth be told and the world will act to allow the West Papuan people gain their right to self-determination.

Ask your government to support media freedom in West Papua

The New Zealand government recently passed a motion calling for “genuine media freedom in West Papua”. Sadly, on 6th August two French journalists, Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat, who were reporting on the growing human rights crisis in the Lanny Jaya region of West Papua were arrested and are being threatened with a 5 year jail sentence and a 40,000 US dollar fine just for reporting in West Papua.

Anzac Day 2014

Written by Paul Madden, 16 April 2014

Our Mates the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels!

On ANZAC day, Australia will express its gratitude to those who fought to protect our freedom.  Those expressions of gratitude will be extended to the Papuan ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ who helped us in World War 2.

The Fuzzy Wuzzies became part of Australian Mythology on Mateship. The war gave birth to sentiments of friendship, kindness and respect for the Papuans.

Who Put the Fox In Charge of the Chickens?

Written by Paul Madden, 12 March 2014

Once upon a time all of the farm animals decided to put the Fox in charge of Chickens!?
Obviously the Chickens didn’t want to be ruled by the Fox!   So “HOW ON EARTH DID THIS HAPPEN?”  Well truth is often stranger than fiction, and evil often masquerades itself as good.  Let’s have a look at what happened.
The Fox was a very shrewd fellow and knew how to make the most of a situation.  He noticed a commotion happening at the farm and seized the moment.  Some of the greediest ‘Capital’ animals namely the Eagle, the Bull Dog, the Cow and the Kangaroo were concerned about the growing number of ‘Commune’ animals and so with a little prompting from the Fox they decided that the best way to stop growth of the ‘Communers’ was to allow the Fox to rule over the Chickens.  And the deal sweetener was that the Fox would share the Chickens’ eggs with the Greedy ‘Capitals’.  The Greedy ‘Capitals’ loved the free eggs (the Freeport Golden Eggs) and rationalised to themselves that the Chickens were too ‘primitive’ to look after themselves.
The Fox was the cruellest of rulers and the Chickens kept crying and waling and many of the Chickens ‘mysteriously’ disappeared.   Often the Fox was found with feathers in his mouth.  But the greedy Eagle, Bull Dog, Cow and Kangaroo covered their eyes and ears and continued to enjoy the free eggs that the Fox kept giving them.
Some of the other farm animals started to ask “What is going on?” Why are there so many feathers everywhere?” And “Why can’t the Chickens be free to look after themselves like the rest of the animals?”
This is when the Greedy animals had to think of something that would appease their own nagging consciences and befuddle the minds of the other animals.  This is when the Greedy animals came up with their ‘Unilateral Official Statement’: “We respect the territorial sovereignty of the Fox to rule the Chickens.”  And that was that!!
The Fox continued to have feathers hanging out of his month and the Greedy Eagle, Bull Dog, Cow and Kangaroo continued to have egg yolk running out of their months!

Smack the UN

Written by Paul Madden,16 December 2013

The United Nations says don’t smack your kids[1] but at the same time they turn a blind eye to the West Papuan Genocide[2].

Hmmm, this confuses me, the UN says it is wrong to smack your kids but it is okay to perform genocide[3].
On the other hand, the Bible[4] says physical discipline drives away foolishness.

So here is an idea that might work - how about we give the foolish members of the UN the cane every day until the foolishness is driven out of them?!

[1] United Nations wants Australia to ban smacking, prosecute offending parents
[2] Vanuatu makes stand for West Papua at UN
[3] ‘Champions of rights?’ an article written by Dr Augusto Zimmermann and published by the Institute of Public Affairs.
